Ndlundung New Year Camp

Camping Ground at Ndlundung

New Year, the world celebration

The first day in January or people call it as new year eve has always been a part of world celebration. They would go to special places to celebrate the coming year and to leave the preceding year as their past. Some write their resolution to be done in the coming year, and some chilling out with friends camping. For me, it's just another day to pass, nothing special to celebrate. I would spend my new year night sleeping on bed.

That didn't happen on 1st January 2018. My friend asked me to join her spending new year night camping at Ndlundung camp site. "Well, why not!" I said. Going out town has always been special for me, more special than the new year eve itself.

My friend is a Christian, she took her Church friends and family for camping. Seem that I was the only Muslim joining the event. But that's okay, being different in faith is not a problem in friendship to Indonesian. We could get along well by respecting each other faith.

The Sleeping Volcano

So I went with my friend by motorcycle to the camp site in 2 hours ride. Her friends and family will come later. The chilling breeze of mountainous region grasp us on our way. Along with beautiful scenery of Mt.Penanggungan slope. Green rice terraces carpetting the slope, making it more jaw dropping. Luckily the road itself was in a good condition, and the clear sky has been more supporting on our way. Clouds encircling the top of Mt.Penanggungan, made it look more mystical than it is before.

Mt.Penanggungan is a small sleeping cone shaped volcano, located in East Java. It is a part of Arjuno-Welirang volcanic line, one of volcanic compound in East Java. Its position is somewhere in the middle of those two other volcanoes, Mt.Arjuno and Mt.Welirang. These volcanoes, especially Mt.Penanggungan, has played a big role to the Javanese culture and history. It is said to be a sacred mountain as many historical remains found on it. Those remains dated back a thousand years ago.

Where to set the tent?

Many tents has been set up at Ndlundung camp site. We had a hard time to find a good place to set up our own. There are tents belong to local boyscouts. But they were on the other side of the location we intented. So I went around to find the left over places, we have five tents to set up, unfortunately they are going to be set seperately. There is a woman that helped us setting up our tents. She's been here from the day before. So that she can find the best spot earlier. My own little tent sit beside hers.

The time comes when the other members came. There were many of them, 12 of them I guess. I didn't know she would take the whole church members. Once we settled down, we got busy with our own evening activities. I was planning to wash myself at the nearby river before the sun down. I took one of smaller member with me to the river. He was a 10 years old boy having the same adventure sense.

The camp area is full of pines. Its shape like teraces with pine trees in between the tents. I walked down following the river sound. Once I stepped foot on the small river, I was amazed by the surrounding scenery. Lush rain forest vegetation covering almost most of the hills area on the other side. While its valley is full of crops with small clean water river, or I should say canal, on its side. The water itself is managed in a way that it could flow in between terraces. All I could see was green color. Green and refreshing.

Reminder of Childhood

I followed the river upstream to find good spot for getting wet. The river flow is as deep as my feet. It runs fast. I had to cross it several times. Then suddenly, I saw a natural pool on the river branch not far from where I stood. "That's the place I'm looking for" I said to myself.

The water was freezing cold, I had to slowly put my feet into the water. After I took of my long pant. It's time to get wet, litterally. The stream forming a small waterfall going to the pool. Though it's not as deep as the normal swimming pool. Having this in the middle of nowhere is fun. We had fun for few hours. Taking photos and underwater videos is a must to do as we got all wet.

This made me forget that I was a grown up man, feel like my childhood came back to me. No, it's not the time to be an adult. There was no one else but me and the little boy that time. So nothing disturbing our fun time. The boy was busy catching the water bugs, one that stay float with their long thin legs. When I, on the other hand, was busy making underwater videos.

The noisy night

When we came back to the camping site, the other members start to do the same. I took a rest a little while with chocolate bar on my hand. The other adult members were starting to make diner.

When the night came, many other campers started bonfires. We made our own too, but it was intended to cook our fishes. A delicious diner I would say, nasi and grilled fishes were the main menu. Not to forget the coffee I brought along. They too have coffee, but I prefer my fresh grinded Mandheling coffee.

The blurry moon and the stars covering most of the sky view, the cricket noise too, dominating the night. Everyone was busy chatting and joking around with their camp members. Some laughing very loud for hours. These noises made me feel like I wasn't in the middle of the jungle.

I got sleepy so easy, I thought that there were nothing else to do after diner time. Most of the members were new to me. I couldn't get along to all of them, only a few. So I decided to lay down in the tent. Yes, I was alone inside a dark tent. I could hear the crickets noises from surrounding, and yes, the loud laughing too.

I thought I could get a good sleep coz I was in the jungle. I was wrong. The culture of having fireworks during the new year night had come to remote area like this. Holy shit, I didn't expect that. It's been going for as long as two hours I guess. So I couldn't sleep the way I wanted. I was dreaming of a good undisturbed sleep while camping. I didn't want to see or hear fireworks like one we have in cities.

Resolutions and the new beginning

Yeah, that's my new year alright! I had a good time, so I thought. I woke up early in the morning 1st of January. Fresh air was all I need, I am sure it will refresh my mind. To get more refreshing to my body, I went to the pool again. My friends were already there having shower.

There were small dispute before we went home. I decided to get my tent ready, while they insisted to have breakfast. So I left my half ready tent for them. Simple breakfast was enough for our energy. Once we finished, we continue packing up our stuff. Not too much for this new year, but it's enough.

Well, my resolutions to be done would be, more traveling and setting up new bussiness. I haven't done exploring East Java, especially the south coast region. My book would not complete without doing so, and I hope it will be done sooner than I expected. Coz I can't wait to explore the Nusa Tenggara Islands once my book is done.

A December Surprised Trip, Jogjakarta (part 3 of 3)

Mt.Merapi
Lava Tour Kaliadem

We decided to spend our last day in Jogjakarta adventuring Kaliadem region. It's tourist's closest point to enjoy the mighty Mt.Merapi. Mt.Merapi is an active volcano that oftenly erupts. Its recent eruption was October 2010. Destroyed villages on its slope and killed many. Mbah Marijan, the guardian of Mt.Merapi, was also killed during 2010 eruption.

The tour started at dawn, but due to girls complexcity in preparing themself, we were late. The shining orange light was already on the horizon. There were also arguing in the number of person can get into the ugly jeep. The tour operator insisted only four could get into the car. We were eight, and three were on the Trail bikes. So five people left.

Finally, five of us could get in to the car if only two ladies must stand on the back of the car. Morning breeze touched our fair skin in the sudden when we reach the Kaliadem region. The surrounding scene was breathtaking. Sometimes we see lush jungle far on the other side of Kaliadem. Moreover, we could capture the clear picture of Mt.Merapi.

The road itself is a combination of both smooth and harsh road. It became harsh when the car going on bumpy road which full of big rocks on it. Our body was badly shaken by the car. Sometimes, I think the ugly jeep is to blame for the great shake during the journey. But no, I think it's more to the road condition. We found many holes filled with browny water. But none of them could stop me from capturing the scene and sometimes recording a video of the journey.

The Kaliadem Bunker

Finally, we've got to the end of the journey. The Kaliadem Bunker. It's a place, thought to be save place, for officers to watch the volcano activities prior to eruption time. Two people died in it when they couldn't escape the "Wedhus Gembel" or the hot cloud coming from the volcanic eruption. The thick wall of the bunker couldn't isolate the heat from the hot cloud. Such a tragic event I'd say.

Many visitors were already on location when we arrived. More breathtaking view of the remaining sunrise still amazed us. The far horizon seem to greet us with smile, though sometimes the sun itself hide among the clouds. And yes, capturing the moment is all we do in such situation.

We walk heading to the bunker, which is now turned into a touristic venue where the words "Bunker Kaliadem" are written on it, big. Each of us were busy taking our own pictures, sometimes in group. The Mt.Merapi background was just irresistable

A Broken Hand

Mas Andy was so eager to ride the trail bike. He wanted to show his fellow from the office that he had a great adventure during the Lava Tour Kaliadem. Sometimes it's exagerated.

He asked one of us to record video while he's riding the trail. He didn't wear any safety though, neither the helmet nor the boots. As he got a little bit far from the rest of us. He suddenly fell off the bike after passing a high mound of land.

Some of the girls spontanously scream when he fell. All of us witnessed the accident, first we thought he was okay. Mbak Fanty said "He is fine, need no worry" yet no one knows what really happened. Few minutes have passed and he didn't appear on the scene. The tour guide started to worry and went towards him. I was too, walked to see how he was doing. It turned out to be bad, very bad. He broke his hand.

Swollen hand
That's him alright

The 2010 Eruption Museum

So we went back with a complex situation, yet mas Andy insisted to continue the trip. The destinations are in the same way of going back to the basecamp. First is the Alien Stone, it's a location where we can find huge block of stone trhown away from the volcano during the eruption. The shape itself looks like an alien face, so they say, with eyes and nose and lips, if we get the right angle. I couldn't get it of course. For me it's just big stone with random shape.

So we continue to the last destination, the Museum of 2010 Eruption. Here the scene is rather creepy than to be called touristic. A half destroyed house with melting household and bones of livestock from the event. I see all stuff here were not in a good shape. They even have a clock sticked on wall half melted showing the exact time the day Mt.Merapi erupted.

Series of photograph showing the eruption event, the people whom were evacuated with face full of volcanic ash. Such a horrible situation shown in the photos. They even have variety of rock samples from the eruption.

This what we can learn from the place, that despite the fertile land and beautiful panoramic view from Mt.Merapi, it can also be the source of disasters.

Durian is the music of my country

We stopped for lunch after leaving the Lava Tour Basecamp. Then continue to accompany Mas Andy to get a traditional paramedic help from the therapist nearby. Then we continue heading to the Jogjakarta city.

One good idea popped up from Mbak Fanty. "Let's find durian" she said. I was the first person to agree to that idea. First we couldn't find it untill all of us given up. Then decided to go straight to the Lempuyangan Train Station.

God blessed us, just nearby the train station we saw piles of durian on the pedestrian, guarded by a sleeping woman turned out to be the seller. Once and twice effort of bergaining, she started to open them one by one once the price was agreed.

So yummy, it is the most delicious fruit ever. Some say it is fruit of heaven. Although many people hate it. I will be the one saying who dumb enough to resist its addicting taste. Well, durian is famous of its strong smell. One German guy told me it smells like stingy feet, when I was eating durian in Bangkok, Thailand. It's true somehow, but many people, like me, is crazy about it.

Eating durian

Such a great gimmick from our unforgetable trip to enjoy durian. Time ticking fast, our train was already stand by. We don't want to repeat  the same mistake again. The problem was that we parked the car far away from the train station entrance, such a waste of energy.

So long Jogjakarta, we will see you again on the next trip with many more destinations to explore. Thanks to you guys had made me a back up plan for this trip. Please do so again in the future, I'll be glad to say "yes" right away.

A December Surprised Trip, Jogjakarta (part 2 of 3)

Matching The Itenerary

Day 1, we departed from the hotel all together by car we rent from the local. The destination would be Sri Gethuk waterfal. It's a unique waterfal with steps looking terrain, located on a river made by white limestone. It's not the waterfal that we're looking for the most. It's the surrounding nature, when exploring the river with boat, that looks natural and peaceful as shown on the photos and videos we found on internet.

Since nobody knew the road, we used waze app. Though we got lost a little, we managed to arrived at the destination. Yet it was closed. Such a dissapointment situation. There were few men arround, thought to be the local tour guide. This was my second experience coming here and I couldn't get to the waterfal. Exactly the same place, where we can find a huge cave called The Rancang Kencono Cave with big tree in the middle of its entrance.

Rancang Kencono Cave entrance

So we continued our trip, this time we were heading to pine forest of Mangunan. It is not really my thing though. But it's the majority vote. I proposed to the Nglambor Beach as written on my itenerary.

The place was just a pine tree forest with iconic man made decoration for visitors to take photos. Guess what? We were there only to take photos, in many poses. I found out that there are many destinations here with similar scene to offer, pine trees. They got different names, and yes, some of them are instagram hits photo location.

So we continued to the next destination, the Songgolangit forest. Here we found those small houses made of branches, pretty good I'd say. The place is also the shooting location of the recent Indonesian horror movie. I had the opportunity to flying fox here. Eh... not bad. Though not the adventure I expected.

Destination of Confusion

It was almost the end of the day when we had lunch and heading to newly constructed waterboom the Jogja Bay. Yet the closing time was in another 30 minutes, and we were out of option for where we go next. There were arguing where we should go, I had given my opinions. Seems that no one agreed, especially the sponsor.

So he drove us to Kaliurang direction, and more arguing happened. Until they had nothing to think of. I, for the last time, proposed to spend our sunset time at the Plaosan Temple, an ancient ruins nearby the great Prambanan Temple. Surprisingly, no one opposed the idea.

A Mission Accomplished in Sunset

Almost dark but still okay, the sunset wasn't as expected. We arrived at the Plaosan Temple. It's one of ancient ruins found in Prambanan Plains. The temple itself resembles Budhism, and thought to serve as monastery in the past. There are 2 temples respectedly, one is Plaosan Lor and the other is Plaosan Kidul. Those two are seperated by main road. Plaosan Kidul is bigger and had more visitors. Cause it's on main road.

I was glad that we could visit the place. My Prambanan Plains mission accomplished at last. This iconic temple complex is famous for instagrammers. Some good pictures showing that the temple is shown in shilouete by the sunset with rice field on frame.

What a happy family
Inside the temple complex

The Plaosan Temple consist of two big structures surrounded by rectangular wall, even the two temples is separated by a wall. Outer wall consists of many smaller structures, a typical Sanjayan Dinasty era. This similar to the complex of Prambanan and Sewu temples. Some of the smaller structures are well restored, the rest are looking like the piles of scattered stone, just like  what mas Andy said.

The skies turned to dark, yet we were still busy taking pictures. I, on the other hand, was searching  the sunset scene with the colorful skies, the dark blue, bright orange and even magenta.

A December Surprised Trip, Jogjakarta (part 1 of 3)

A Nearly Late Train

A phone call recieved that afternoon, it was from Sister Fanty. A surprised call I would say, I haven't had any contact to anybody from the company I just recently resigned, and yeah, I owe her some money that I couldn't pay to that particular day. What I thought to be a debt collecting call, which of course not her typical at all, turned out to be a call of trip invitation. Guess what? It's Jogjakarta, one of my favourite destination, and I just said "yes". Like the "yes" answer in a marriage proposal.

I prepared the trip itenerary like she asked, but many optionals for them to choose. It's open discussion kinda itenerary. As I put ancient ruin in my Itenerary, a senior trip participant- the sponsor- said why would we go to piles of scattered stone? I got mad to what he said, it's like he doesn't value our ancestors heritage by saying "a plies of scattered stone" to this ancient ruin. But anyway, He is the boss, what can I say?

So the day came, it was 8th of December 2017. We had to catch the afternoon train. The road is usually full of vehicles on that particular time, plus it was going to be a long weekend a head. I got my uber car at exactly one hour before the train schedule. Just as I thought, a traffic jam held us. I got stucked in traffic just around 1 km to the train station. And so was Sister Fanty. We talked on the phone, and She said She was nearby too. We agreed to walk!

I got out of the car, it was 20 minutes to the train departure. So I walked fast. Just when I got close to the train station, I heard somebody called me. She was too walk. So we ran to the train station. Luckily, few minutes left before the train departure. Only that, I didn't see other trip participant there. We were so worry about them being late.

Just 5 minutes before the train departure, they ran toward us, five of them. This means only one person left, Mas Andy!! The sponsor. We hurrying to get in to the train. The train is about to move and He isn't there. WTF!! Then I saw Him running exactly when the wistle sign rang.

It's them
Me and Mbak Fanty

A Back Up Plan, Me

As we started our journey, I sat with Mbak Fanty. She is like a sister to me. And I was playing a role as assistant to her. Yeah, whatever it benefits me, I take it.

I just knew that the name on the ticket wasn't mine. It was someone else whom supposed to joint the trip, yet He cancelled it in last minute. So I said to her. "It seems like I was only a back up plan, yes?" In a dissapointing tone. "It doesn't matter" She said. "As long as you are the one who get the trip" She added. "It's true" I said to myself. Despite being a back up plan. I earned all the benefits.

The Horror Night

I got to share a room with the sponsor, mas Andy. I told him to be patient, if not, maybe it is better to get another room. I have a severe snoaring problem while sleeping, and also a sleep apnea. It is a condition when in the middle of snoaring, a person will stop breathing for a moment, literally. Some say that I got it really bad.

In the car during the trip in the next morning, mas Andy told us that he couldn't sleep well last night. "It was a horror night" he said. I snoared too loud so that he couldn't get a good sleep. The sound was like a person sawing a wood. "I tried to cover my ears with pillow, but it didn't work" he said again. Well, I'm sorry man, I told you right!
